IRC [12:53] <Dossy> howdy, Rick.
IRC [13:01] <KNReC> hey. Glad to be back online.
IRC [14:12] <Dossy> man. cleaning up my desk has really lifted my spirits.
IRC [14:12] <Dossy> I guess it's my geek equivalent of women's buying new shoes ... lol
IRC [14:13] <KNReC> yeah; that's the way I feel about cleaning up my woodshop; don't ever actually have to build anything as long as the shop's clean :-)
IRC [14:15] <Dossy> Heh!
IRC [14:16] <Dossy> Here's what my office/desk looks like, as of about 5 minutes ago - http://flickr.com/photos/dossy/2451809217/
IRC [14:17] <KNReC> Well, that makes me feel better about mine! I've been building home office furniture for mine for, oh, 4 years now; most of the files are
IRC [14:17] <KNReC> still in boxes.
IRC [14:17] <KNReC> And only my wife's technical books are on shelves (priorities, ya know)
IRC [14:18] <Dossy> yeah - see the corner of the room above my desk where the didgeridoo is currently being stored? I'm thinking of putting up some shelves in that area
IRC [14:18] <Dossy> although my desk is ~48 inches deep - so it'll make those shelves hard to get to
IRC [14:19] <KNReC> Yeah; I was wondering how you got that printer to fit behind your laptop.
IRC [14:20] <Dossy> yeah. I _love_ deep desks like this one.
IRC [14:21] <Dossy> and, it's only supported by two legs set 3/4ths back - nothing to whack your kneese on
IRC [14:21] <KNReC> It's funny; I've been back & forth on such things. I'm currently using a corner desk, so it's deep in the middle, but only 15" on the sides.
IRC [14:22] <KNReC> I definitly like the trestle support. Had one of those @ my last KNowNow office; it was particularly cool since it had
IRC [14:22] <Dossy> I think it's 5/8ths inch veneer MDF - smooth, like plastic
IRC [14:22] <KNReC> jackscrews that would control the height of the monitor part of the table separately from the keyboard part.
IRC [14:22] <Dossy> ah, nice!
IRC [14:22] <KNReC> yeah, that rocked. Tried to buy one before we moved so I could build my home desk from it -- but it belonged to the landlord.
IRC [14:22] <Dossy> yeah, i think I need to build two shelves for the left and right sides of my desk - take advantage of some of that vertical space above my desk
IRC [14:23] <Dossy> You could always buy parts, I guess.
IRC [14:23] <KNReC> Would have had to do more shopping than I was willing to :-)
IRC [14:23] <Dossy> What I need are two 24" flat panels where my printer is. hee.
IRC [14:24] <KNReC> Yup. I like that idea. The thing I'm playing with for my clutter-shelves now is trying to take a painted tapestry & put it on a roller
IRC [14:24] <KNReC> like a roll-up screen, so I can just pull it down when we have company.
IRC [14:24] <Dossy> heh. "ignore the mess behind the curtain"
IRC [14:25] <Dossy> luckily, my home office is a separate room in the house. if I had to, I could just close the door ...
IRC [14:25] <KNReC> Most of my shelves have doors for that, but sometimes doors get in the way. I like the curtain idea so I can just get at everything.
IRC [14:25] <Dossy> yeah. I hate drawers for that reason
IRC [14:25] <KNReC> That's tough in our place; we live in San Fran, so the house itself is pretty small (1200sq); every room gets used for more than one thing.
IRC [14:26] <Dossy> Mm, yeah. Our house is only ~1,700 sq ft.
IRC [14:26] <Dossy> But, yeah - I remember when we rented a 970 sq ft apartment ... tight.
IRC [14:26] <KNReC> Yup.
IRC [14:27] <KNReC> So you work at home most days?
IRC [14:27] <Dossy> You probably pay more for your 1,200 sq ft than I do for my 1,700 sq ft. And, I'm in northern NJ.
IRC [14:27] <Dossy> Work at home 100%.
IRC [14:27] <Dossy> Except when I travel.
IRC [14:27] <Dossy> Which is, like, maybe once a quarter.
IRC [14:28] <KNReC> Nice way to do it. And I got lucky as far as the house goes; I bought in '96, so it was expensive, but not the outrageous level things got to.
IRC [14:29] <Dossy> Yeah, we bought in 2001 - mortgage rates were nice and low (we got ours at 5.875%) and we nailed the price _right_ before things got stupid.
IRC [14:29] <KNReC> That's great!
IRC [14:29] <Dossy> A year after we bought the house, we were told that it wouldn't be unreasonable for us to sell the house at a 20-25% price increase, and it would sell right away. heh.
IRC [14:31] <KNReC> Bet you're glad you didn't play that game. I know I'm glad we didn't. One of the houses across the street from us burned down in 2006 about 6 mos after the current owner bought it...
IRC [14:31] <KNReC> by the time he finances & permits the repair, he'll either be bankrupt or we'll be in another decade.
IRC [14:32] <Dossy> yeah - we chose this house to live in - not to make money on
IRC [14:32] <KNReC> OTOH, he's a commodity trader, so he's not doing too badly so far this year. I just can't imagine spending what he did on what's now just bare earth and'll continue to be empty for another year or 3
IRC [14:33] <Dossy> hopefully at least he can get the tax assessor to lower the taxes on the lot :)
IRC [14:33] <Dossy> and, he could just flip it to a developer - take a small hit, but be clear of the mess
IRC [14:33] <KNReC> Yeah, though in SF, the typical assessment is about 2/3 property, 1/3 house.
IRC [14:34] <Dossy> Ouch!
IRC [14:34] <Dossy> The land of fruits and nuts. Man.
IRC [14:34] <KNReC> He probably could do that at no loss now, to think of it. My neighborhood's managed to hold its value (well, we're only 2-5% down), but time on market is going up, which means the prices'll come down some more.
IRC [14:35] <KNReC> Yeah, though when it comes to fire insurance, you're only insuring the 1/3 :-)
IRC [14:35] <Dossy> yup, same here - things are coming down 15%
IRC [14:36] <KNReC> It's the earthquake insurance that'll kill u if you buy it: it's twice our fire insurance, with a 15%-of-total-value deductible.
IRC [14:38] <KNReC> Anyway, I suppose I should get some work done. Oh -- has anybody tried AOLServer on Tcl 8.5 that you know of? We haven't, but every time I swear @ Tcl, it seems I find somebody at least tried to fix it in 8.5.
IRC [14:39] <KNReC> (I fought "string is list" yesterday, for example.)
IRC [14:46] <Dossy> I don't know specifically who has, but I'm sure there are folks who are running AOLserver w/ Tcl 8.5. Hopefully, someone on the chat is and will speak up eventually. :-)
IRC [15:05] <EvilOtto> why oh why are there both cvs.aolserver.sourceforge.net and aolserver.cvs.sourceforge.net and why are they not the same thing?!?!
IRC [15:06] <Dossy> LOL. yeah - SF changed that a while back
IRC [15:06] <Dossy> aolserver.cvs.sf.net is the "right" one now
IRC [15:06] <Dossy> it used to be cvs.aolserver.sf.net but I guess they realized that was a DNS nightmare
IRC [15:06] <Dossy> now, they can just wildcard *.cvs.sf.net and publish one DNS record :)
IRC [15:17] <EvilOtto> the _init problem with aolserver HEAD not building with tcl8.5 - is that an aolserver problem or a tcl problem?
IRC [15:52] *** EvilOtto parted the chat.
IRC [15:54] *** EvilOtto joined the chat.
IRC [16:09] <frankie> EvilOtto: it's an aolserver issue
IRC [16:09] <EvilOtto> I'm trying to run cvs HEAD (with tcl8.5.2) and I'm consistently seeing what appears to be the first connection on a conn thread e.g., [-default:0-] hangs, then the ssecond and subsequent ones run fine. (and the log shows that the first finishes when the second one comes in).
IRC [16:09] <frankie> EvilOtto: that's a well-known patch for gcc guess about that
IRC [16:12] <EvilOtto> It's not well-known to cvs :) I got it to compile by patching configure to always add in nostartfiles ... not sure if that's right on e.g., solaris tho.
IRC [16:14] <frankie> yes that's right
