IRC [08:15] <Arafangion> What's so good about this server, compared to apache?
IRC [08:16] <Dossy> What features are important to you in a webserver?
IRC [08:17] <Arafangion> Speed, reliability, and security.
IRC [08:18] <Arafangion> imho, webservers are doing too much as it is.
IRC [08:30] <Dossy> AOLserver's comparable (slightly better) with regard to speed and reliability compared to Apache. It is vastly superior with regard to security.
IRC [08:31] <Arafangion> In what way?
IRC [08:36] <Arafangion> In terms of security, that is.
IRC [08:37] <Dossy> Google for Apache vulnerabilities and AOLserver vulnerabilities.
IRC [08:37] <Dossy> heh.
IRC [08:38] <Dossy> Anyhow - the point is, AOLserver has been scrutinized plenty -- by hackers trying to hack AOL services, by independent code auditing companies, etc. -- and the very few vulnerabilities have been found.
IRC [08:39] <Dossy> Compared to Apache's "security vulnerability du jour", forcing admins to upgrade frequently.
IRC [08:39] <Dossy> Anyhow, I need to go -- if you're here when I get back, we can discuss this more.
IRC [08:39] <Arafangion> Not likely, but sure :)
IRC [08:39] <Dossy> Or, you're welcome to come back here another time, too. :-)
IRC [08:39] * Dossy && idle
IRC [08:39] <Arafangion> :)
IRC [08:39] <Arafangion> Cya then :)
IRC [08:50] <Arafangion> I'd advise putting the following url into the topic, for new users like me: http://www.eveandersson.com/arsdigita/asj/aolserver/introduction-1
IRC [09:11] <Arafangion> Hmm, aolserver appears to be quite decent, according to that article.
IRC [09:18] <Arafangion> When was it opensourced?
IRC [09:20] <martinh> only quite decent? got any articles that make aolserver look like the God of all servers?
IRC [09:20] <Arafangion> martinh: Heh
IRC [09:21] <Arafangion> AOLserver seems to be very "clean", except for that "AOL" prefix.
IRC [09:22] <martinh> well. they didn't write it. they only bought it. :->
IRC [09:23] <martinh> but, keep in mind that it also means that that's what powers aol's site, so that says something for its use in high volume environments.
IRC [09:23] <Arafangion> AOL internet and their chat service has probably given them a bad name, imho.
IRC [09:30] <Arafangion> Does aolserver support webdav and those features? (Would it be possible to port subversion to it?)
IRC [09:41] <martinh> I'm sure it could. . .but, why would one want to?
IRC [09:42] <Arafangion> Good point.
IRC [09:43] <Arafangion> I believe that the subversion guys used apache for it's portability and it's security model.
IRC [09:43] <Arafangion> Probably better to give it it's own server, though.
IRC [09:43] <martinh> actually, more like, why would anyone care about subversion?
IRC [09:44] <Arafangion> You ever use cvs?
IRC [09:48] <martinh> yea.
IRC [09:48] <martinh> don't have a lot of choice. but i hate it.
IRC [09:48] <Arafangion> Subversion is a nicer, better replacement.
IRC [09:48] <Arafangion> Why do you hate CVS?
IRC [09:49] <martinh> subversion still has pretty much all the major problems that cvs has. . .arch is a little better, but i really wanna get vesta deployed.
IRC [09:50] <Arafangion> martinh: Please elaborate.
IRC [09:51] <martinh> vestasys.org
IRC [09:57] <Arafangion> martinh: Hmm, looks very good. Seems to be more than what CVS and cousins are made for, though.
IRC [09:57] <Arafangion> martinh: Doesn't look like it's quite so useful for the non-programmer.
IRC [10:00] <martinh> it's a complete repository and build environment in one.
IRC [10:00] <Arafangion> martinh: Is it portable? Is it possible to make the same program build on multiple OS's using it?
IRC [10:01] <martinh> using cross compilers.
IRC [10:02] <Arafangion> So, can't compile it on windows, you must use a cross compiler?
IRC [10:02] <martinh> at least. . .but I'm pretty sure it'll do it natively for most unixes.
IRC [10:20] *** Arafangion_ joined the chat.
IRC [10:22] <Arafangion> I'll investigate it, never-the-less, thanks :)
