IRC [11:38] <holycow> hi guys
IRC [11:38] <Dossy> nmorning.
IRC [11:38] <holycow> hey why do i get messaged by the aim bot whenever i join?
IRC [11:38] <holycow> the message is the same as the topic ...
IRC [11:39] <holycow> more or less anyway :)
IRC [11:50] <Dossy> yeah
IRC [11:50] <Dossy> but not everyone reads the topic.
IRC [12:13] *** frankie parted the chat.
IRC [12:17] <martinh> but really, who cares about the topic? :->
IRC [12:20] <martinh> so. is there a decent list of stuff written for aolserver? like simple scripts and other basics. like one might find for php?
IRC [12:20] <martinh> I see the few things on the toolkits page and the bottom of the modules page, but that's only a few things. there's got to be more.
IRC [12:37] *** tekbasse joined the chat.
IRC [12:44] <Dossy> martinh: I'd really like to start collecting apps for AOLserver *other* than just OpenACS.
IRC [12:49] <martinh> ok. so, there isn't a good list. :->
IRC [12:49] <martinh> I know that some stuff is available.
IRC [12:52] <tekbasse> It seems to me that a multi-media version of aolserver that focuses on get/putting matrixes would be quite useful for robotic control
IRC [12:55] <Dossy> huh?
IRC [12:55] <Dossy> haha
IRC [12:58] <tekbasse> the various arms, motors etc would be connected via tcp as ip clients, each with i/o that aolserver controls through adp/tcl
IRC [12:59] <martinh> isn't that a bit of a vertical market?
IRC [13:00] <tekbasse> depends on how far tcp controls become integrated into mass market products. Robots don't have to be in the classic style.
IRC [13:05] <tekbasse> kinda OT, but been meaning to make the point for awhile now.
IRC [13:06] <tekbasse> of course, someone with a t1 and some hacking might start the next "colossus the forbin project" =)
IRC [13:07] <tekbasse> not that the someone would be inspired by how aolserver's logo looks like a revision of colossus'
IRC [13:08] <Dossy> ...
IRC [13:09] <Dossy> is there a more mainstream app. that hasn't been done very well yet/
IRC [13:09] <Dossy> I'd like to stary a company offering a hosted service on AOLserver for a particular web app.
IRC [13:09] <Dossy> similar to flickr for photos, and six apart for blogs, etc.
IRC [13:10] <Dossy> just can't come up with a good product idea.
IRC [13:18] <tekbasse> multi-user trek? =)
IRC [13:25] <martinh> [to Dossy]: actually, I have been pondering. . .doing virtual hosting well might not be a bad idea. . .
IRC [13:25] <martinh> having a cluster of virtual hosts would be a good selling point. who cares if a box goes down, you don't loose all the customers on it.
IRC [13:28] <martinh> not to mention that a single cluster of them would be easier to manage.
IRC [13:45] <Dossy> define "virtual hosting" and "clusters"
IRC [13:47] <martinh> virtual hosting. lots of little sites running under a single big one. and clustering, running one server on many hosts.
IRC [13:47] <Dossy> static content?
IRC [13:48] <martinh> or dynamic.
IRC [13:49] <Dossy> ADP/Tcl dynamic, or CGI?
IRC [13:49] <martinh> I would say limit it to adp/tcl. unless the cgi's can handle clustering on their own. . .
IRC [14:05] <Dossy> virtual hosting of ADP/Tcl for external customers is JUST not worth it
IRC [14:05] <Dossy> with threading, you do not have process-isolation.
IRC [14:05] <Dossy> you'd have to run a separate nsd per customer.
IRC [14:06] <Dossy> not scalable.
